Dan,

If you make a grayscale image of the X's like you say, and have a very
dark (Black) background with the X being 255,255,255 with the edges
feathered to black and use this as a diffuse or bump map you should get
the effect you're looking for.  Then you can color the object anyway you
like.

I believe this will work.
